How can you identify an authentic Kashmiri Pashmina shawl?

Authentic Kashmiri Pashmina is hand-spun and handwoven from the fine undercoat of the Changthangi goat, found at altitudes above 14,000 feet in Ladakh. Genuine pieces often carry a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, possess a micron count of 12 to 16, and feature slight natural irregularities in the weave that machine-made replicas cannot duplicate.

What is the difference between Aari and Sozni embroidery on Kashmiri shawls?

Sozni is a highly delicate needlework technique that uses a very fine needle, often creating complex motifs like chinar leaves and paisleys with up to 500 stitches per centimeter. Aari work utilizes a specialized hooked needle (aari) to create thicker, continuous chain stitches, resulting in bold, vibrant floral patterns typically seen on heavier woolen shawls and Pherans.

Is a true Pashmina shawl always 100% pure wool?

Authentic luxury Pashmina is 100% pure Changthangi goat wool. However, due to its extreme delicacy, the wool is sometimes blended with a small percentage of fine silk to add tensile strength for intricate embroideries like Tilla work, resulting in a Semi-Pashmina blend.
